Vehicle Drug Testing & Decontamination

Background

Following initial testing, we plan vehicle decontamination around the substances detected, affected materials and areas that can be accessed.

Cleaning can offer a practical alternative to extensive interior replacement, particularly when replacement parts are costly or unavailable. Seats, carpets, headliners and HVAC components are considered as part of the work plan.

We agree the cleaning scope and post-cleaning acceptance criteria before work begins. Where a component cannot be adequately accessed or treated, we discuss replacement with the customer or repair facility.

Truck Cabs & Difficult Interior Contamination

Heavy truck cabs and sleeper compartments can require a different work plan from a passenger car. A bunk, storage locker, floor covering or trim panel may need to be opened or removed before the affected area can be reached. We review the reported contamination, photos and any work already completed before proposing a scope.

Where drug residue is involved, the existing testing and decontamination process remains the basis of the job. The quote identifies the areas included, the access needed and any work that must be completed by the repair facility. Mechanical repairs and electrical work need to be arranged separately.

We also review requests involving other difficult interior contamination and persistent odours. Acceptance depends on the source, materials and access; the method used for a drug residue job is not automatically suitable for every other problem. Rodent-related vehicle projects are handled through body shops, collision centres or insurance companies.

Research on contaminated cars has detected methamphetamine both on surfaces and within porous interior materials. This supports considering the material beneath the visible surface when planning a job; it does not establish the condition of a particular vehicle. Kerry et al., 2025

Cleaning & Decontamination Process

Scenesafe's proprietary cleaning method is a major improvement in our vehicle decontamination work. Further use on real projects has confirmed much faster cleaning and more effective drug residue removal than conventional spray extraction alone, including on porous carpets and fabric seats. The specific method is commercially confidential. We check the results through post-cleaning drug residue testing, with negative results required for completion.

Scope of Work Includes:

Application of appropriate commercially available and custom-formulated decontamination agents backed up by research.

Comprehensive interior decontamination of carpets, all seats, headliner, interior panel surface, doors, and trunk.

Repeated HVAC system treatment using a visualized spray and rinse application.

Interior steam cleaning.

Ongoing drug residue testing throughout the decontamination process.

Post-remediation drug residue verification testing using the selected test method.

Ozone treatment of the vehicle interior and interior dehumidification treatment after decontamination.

Statement of Completion of Decontamination.

No additional long-distance travel charge applies to jobs within Halifax Regional Municipality or Colchester County. Service charges still apply. Outside these areas, any travel charge is confirmed as part of your quote.

Post-Decontamination Testing

After decontamination, we test multiple agreed locations and document the findings. Completion requires the negative results described in our acceptance criteria; a result close to the detection threshold is not a pass. Findings that do not meet the criteria guide further treatment or assessment.

Samples are collected using a 10 cm × 10 cm surface sampling area and analysed using test kits or Field MS, according to the substances initially identified. The selected methods and their detection thresholds form the basis of our company’s acceptance criteria.

For Field MS, we use our own-brand ScenoMS portable mass spectrometer supplied by specialist manufacturing partners. We do not use other brands’ portable MS or IMS instruments. Hands-on comparisons and research guide our equipment choices, and we share field findings with our suppliers and manufacturers to support improvements.

As technical examples under the applicable sampling and testing conditions, approximately 0.44 nanograms of FEN collected from a 100 cm² surface area may trigger a positive result; the approximate positive threshold for COC is 2.2 nanograms. Thresholds vary by substance and method and are not measurements of exposure or health risk.

Completion and Scope

Completion requires negative post-cleaning results for the target substances at the sampled locations, using the selected test methods. We provide a Statement of Completion of Decontamination recording the work and results.

Testing results apply to the sampled surfaces, substances and methods used. Any areas that could not be accessed or treated, and any recommended replacement, are recorded in the project scope and completion documentation.
