From Vape Residues to Field Detection: ScenoMS SFMS1001

An ordinary-looking vape cartridge can contain substances that its packaging, colour or smell cannot identify. When an e-cigarette, refill bottle or unknown liquid needs checking, the useful question is simple: what can be detected in the sample?

The ScenoMS Field Mass Spectrometer (SFMS1001) brings trace substance screening to the inspection site. It can examine collected residues, powders and liquid samples, helping an operator identify targets in its configured substance library while the item is still available for further inspection.

Starting with a vape residue sample

For a suspect vape, an operator can collect accessible residue or a suitable sample of the liquid using the instrument’s sampling procedure. The sample is transferred to a sampling swab and introduced into the analyser.

The same approach applies to residue on a container, packaging or a surface near a suspected source. A small trace can provide a reason to inspect more closely, collect additional samples or arrange laboratory confirmation.

Fast analysis with more chemical detail

The instrument platform is specified to provide results within 10 seconds of analysis. Sampling and instrument readiness checks take additional time. This speed lets an operator act on the findings while the item is still available for further inspection.

Its stated sensitivity reaches the picogram range for selected target substances. A picogram is one trillionth of a gram. Actual detection limits depend on the substance, sample and method, but the practical benefit is the ability to work with traces that are too small to see.

ScenoMS uses ion trap mass spectrometry to examine ions by their mass-to-charge ratio. With the optional tandem mass spectrometry configuration, selected ions can be fragmented and their products examined. That extra chemical information helps distinguish target substances from interfering compounds and supports more selective identification in complex samples.

A workflow suited to on-site inspection

Direct swab sampling keeps routine operation straightforward and avoids elaborate sample preparation for suitable samples. A 10.1-inch touchscreen, non-radioactive ionization source, automatic calibration and self-cleaning functions support day-to-day use.

The system also stores spectra for playback and exports data through USB. This gives the operator a record to review alongside sample locations, photographs and inspection notes. A useful field result should be something that can be revisited and explained.

A substance library that can be updated

The configured library can cover traditional drugs, synthetic opioids, new psychoactive substances, explosives, selected precursors and cutting agents. Library updates allow additional targets to be incorporated as detection needs change. The relevant target list is confirmed for each instrument configuration.

Gas and hazardous vapour detection can also be supported with the appropriate sampling configuration. This extends the range of possible applications beyond swab-based residue checks.

Applications beyond e-cigarettes

Vehicle inspections: checking sampled areas of recovered vehicles, cabins and cargo spaces for target drug residues, then using the findings to plan further sampling or cleaning.

Property and contents inspections: examining selected surfaces and items where contamination is suspected, including areas that look clean but may still carry detectable residue.

Post-cleaning checks: testing sampled surfaces to see whether target residues remain detectable after treatment, with results recorded for those locations.

Security and field screening: examining accessible traces on parcels, containers and other suspect items for configured drug or explosive targets. The same capabilities can support customs and border inspections where rapid on-site screening is useful.

ScenoMS provides field screening information for the samples tested. Where a formal confirmatory result is required, laboratory analysis remains part of the workflow.

ScenoMS at Scenesafe

Scenesafe supplies the ScenoMS Field Mass Spectrometer under our own brand and uses it in our field work. That experience helps us discuss the practical details with clients: what needs testing, how a sample can be collected and which configuration fits the task.
